Work on Hambantota Airport accelerated
October 25, 2010Construction work on the Hambantota International Airport is being accelerated. It is being built so that aircraft which are planned to be produced in future can be handled.
The total cost of the project is expected to be in the region of 209 Million US Dollars. Work on the first stage is due to be completed in the year 2012. Aircraft will be able to land at the airport with the completion of the first stage. The terminal will be able to park ten aircraft at a time. It is also possessed the most modern technology in the security network. A notable feature is the passenger terminal which will be able to handle One Million passengers at a time. The control tower of the airport will be 41 meters in height. Accordingly, Deputy Minister Rohitha Abegunawardena said that another door to enter the world will be opened in 2012
Construction work on the airport is being carried out in two stages. Chairman of the Airport and Aviation Services Company Prasanna J Wickremasuriya who inspected the progress of the work pointed out that thousands of jobs can be generated with the building of the airport
