Otis Spann was perhaps the finest piano player ever to play with Muddy Waters and he made a few great records on his own like this one from 1962 - it must have been the devil - a rare example of B.B King sitting in with an electric Chicago band. This version was recorded after an all-night party and it sure sounds like it.

  • Of all the great blues artists and songs out there, very little drives me as wild as this! Wish it was recorded better, yet this very quality is part of why it's so wild!

  • @blahblahy0y0 Hi there, do you happen to know the album this is from or can you recommend a particular Otis Spann album? Thanks

  • hell, yeah... real blues, how it should sound...

  • @blahblahy0y0 this song????

  • It's almost hard to believe that this recording was made in the early/mid-50s considering how blues from that time sounded. This song sounds at least 10, maybe even 20, years ahead of its time (disregarding quality), and I think that's likely due to how modern and creative all the artists playing in this song were.

  • I never had this on an LP record, but some sort of compilation cassette tape of various blues artists. It was one of those compilation tapes that was pretty mediocre, only there was this sparkling shining gem in the middle of it. I carted it with me all over the world for years and think I eventually lost it somewhere in the Philippines. I'm almost sure it was titled 'Must have been the devil', not 'I'd rather be the devil'.

  • Can someone help please? Looking for the Lyrics....

    THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!

  • i thought this song was called I'd rather be the devil.....???? thats what its called on voodoo blues compliation

  • @rererererererer2 i know, I was about to say fuck me too. I've heard all the other versions and this one's surprisingly good. I've never actually liked the song till I heard this one. And uh...'commercial' isn't necessarily a curse word you know, just like no category in and of itself is. Also by quality I meant the sound. It's distorted.
