On a rainy Wednesday in November, I was headed home for Thanksgiving and decided to take a little different route than usual. I took State Highway 57 parallel to the former Milwaukee Road line between Green Bay and Milwaukee, which is recreational trail from Green Bay to just north of Hilbert. I had just passed through that town when there alongside the road was the train that works this section of the line, the CN local based out of Neenah, ambling along on its way back from working in Kiel, New Holstein and Chilton. I turned around and headed to the Main Street crossing.

The engine, Grand Trunk Western EMD GP9R 4622, came through light to make a pickup of some gondolas loaded with what looked like chunks of stone or concrete. It shoved these across the road and back into the train, then continued north, soon to take the connector to the east-west ex-MILW Manitowoc line for the rest of the journey back to Neenah. The diamond crossing of these two former CMStP&P lines is still in place on the north side of Hilbert, with about a mile of track continuing north, used only for car storage.

CN intended to abandon a portion of this line south of Kiel in 2004, but ended up selling it to the state of Wisconsin. That part of the line is now operated by WSOR out of Milwaukee.

  • Thanx!

  • I didn't know they still had some of those ancient Geeps on their roster -- nice catch!
