In 1859. Dan Emmett wrote "Dixie" for his band Bryant Minstrels. Two years later, much to its author's chagrin, the song became identified with the Southern side of the Civil War.

Sixteen years earlier, Emmett wrote "The Boatman" performed here by the Tater Diggers at the Montford Music & Arts Festival in Asheville NC May 2009. The Tater Diggers are Caroline Pond: fiddle, Kevin Scanlon: banjo, and Ben Scales: guitar, with Cary Fridley: bass and Larry Jerry: washboard percussion. Traditional clogging by the one and only Don Talley. Video by Mingo.
