This is part 1 of 5 on how to make and stretch your own canvas. This is planning and cutting the wood. Everyone has their own methods, if you have any great suggestions along the way please post it, thanks! Look for multiple episodes, I tried to summarize the process but there is quite a bit of footage so look for more videos about this next week!

  • I have done a lot of building including remodeling my home and working on a garage, my father is a general contractor and taught me most of what I know about power tools. Glad the videos helped. Keep up the good work!

  • I don't know why but the way you speed up the video every time you use the miter saw cracks me up lol

  • @canon21100 :-)

  • I have heard of people doing that, it will not be as good of quality, but if you are a student it should be fine. If you are making professional work I wouldn't recommend doing using that because it could sag and stretch out after under the weight of the applied paint.

  • Thank you for your comment. I will keep that in mind for future tutorials. Best!

  • That roll was a big one and it was about $300, but you can get it by the foot. I order most of my stuff from Dick Blick.

  • Hi Jane, thanks for uploading your video. Are you a carpenter? Just curious because you seem to be comfortable with the power tools. I watched a video of yours a while back and made my own canvas. I made two mistakes. The first was that i didnt had an angle on the edges. And secondly, I did not stretch it tight enough. When i started painting I noticed the inside edge was leaving its mark and the brace down the middle. No worries, I learned from that. Thanks again for your help:)

  • You have a beautiful spirit.

  • I used to cut and stretch my canvas when I was younger. Now in my days I just buy them from the Art Store. I did this procedure, nice saw. I like your staple gun and pen. I still have my first frame from when I first cut my canvas. I think I can say now that you're a pro!!

  • You really should wear eye protection when you are doing that, you only have one set of eyes!

You look nice with 2 eyes. Nice video though.

  • looks like it taes longer time and harder labour maing the frame, than maing the painting.

  • thanks for your amazing tuts , i knew you use the pine wood but what about the material is it poly/cotton or cotton and can i buy it from hankok fabric or jo ann fabric? and put the gesso ...?
