How technology can serve us as we age
Jennie Chin Hansen, the President Elect of AARP, will speak at CITRIS on the needs of seniors. What would be required to have seniors thrive as they age, and what contributions could an institute like CITRIS make?
Abstract:
Technology will vastly improve quality of life both for aging boomers and for caretakers. We know an overwhelming majority of people want to stay in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes and communities. Technological advances can prolong the period of time people can live independently. We can build smart houses, smart ways to help people keep track of their medications, and smart sensors to detect unusual behavior patterns. And children can better monitor their aging parents' health and activity. We are just at the threshold of technological innovations and medical advances that can promote greater fulfillment in the later years.
Biography:
Jennie Chin Hansen is President-Elect of AARP. In 2005 she retired as executive director of On Lok Inc., a family of organizations providing community-based services to seniors throughout San Francisco. On Lok is the prototype for the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that is now available in all 50 states. She began her career in community and public health nursing; in 1980 she joined On Lok as a research associate and later served as executive director. She is a Senior Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, Center for the Health Professions and a part-time nursing faculty member at San Francisco State University. Her numerous awards include the 2005 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Administrator's Award, the 2002 Gerontological Society of America's Maxwell Pollack Award for Productive Aging and the Women's Healthcare Executive Woman of the Year of Northern California.
