The phrase ' Northern Soul' was coined by Blues and Soul magazine writer Dave Godin i the late 60's/early 70's to differentiate between the tunes that DJ's played in London, the new funkyer sounds , and the rarer 'Motown' sounding underground stuff that they played in the north of England, namely Manchesters Twisted Wheel club.
