Interview by Jennifer Chaichang
Music by Mario Monreal.

Ben Lustenhouwer. Born in Soest, The Netherlands in 1951.

He studied drawing and anatomy at an early age with the renowned Beatus Nijs in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Later he visited the Academy of Art in Utrecht. In 1990, he moves with his wife, the sculptres Helma Vanrens, and their daughter Karen to Spain and settles down in Paterna and later in Chelva.
There he is able to dedicate himself full-time to the fine arts and starts gaining a reputation for his portraits. Now many of his works hang in the homes, offices, museums, and universities in whole Europa, painted over the twenty plus years he has lived in Spain.

Ben is an artist trained in the tradition of the Dutch Masters, and dedicated to the continuance of such excellence in his own paintings. He has a keen sense of observation, and an ability to bring out the liveliness of a face. One of the best and lasting tributes to a person is a well painted portrait that captures the likeness and spirit of the subject.
In summer Ben is teaching portrait painting. See:

  • I saw your video of the dog. Nice!! Real oil paint smells better but digital paint is the future?

    all the best. Ben

  • Thank you Mr. Lustenhouwer. Fantastic lesson. I'm an artist of many years and still learning. Interesting to learn from your experiences among different people in different countries. And your portraits! Wow!! I have been commissioned here in East Africa severally for paintings but if I paint like you, I will always have work. Will improve. I am self-taught and my problem has been to apply the right colour in the right place as you said - but also to do it without fear.

    Thanks. Ben

Dat klinkt ook nog eens veel mooier! Dank je voor je vriendelijke woorden.

  • Beautiful! Ben's portraits have so much life! I wish to be able to paint as good as him someday XD

  • @lustenhouwer Traditional painting is way more original and wanted, because digital is ''just'' a print, if you want it on your walls! :D

But yeah, i guess i'ts the future! ^^

When i'm done paying of the dept i have for my parents (vetbills for my dog), i'm definitely gonna try out some traditional painting! :D
