Joe DiMaggio: The Long Vigil - a new book by Jerome Charyn. The author discusses Joe - why he matters to the Yankees and America, and all about Joe & Marilyn - the love affair of the century. He also speaks of Joe's failure to welcome Jackie Robinson to baseball.
Very nicely done. I appreciate Jerome's honest commentary on Joe's silence regarding baseballs integration. Our heroes are never perfect. That's what makes them heroes; otherwise, they would merely be gods. I can't wait to dive into this book. I hear it calling now.

I read this book - and although I never saw Joe DiMaggio, I felt like a kid in the stands, watching my hero play. Reading this book, I was transported back to a time when sports never heard of steroids or multimillion dollar contracts, when sometimes the only thing you could count on in the world was that Joe DiMaggio would make a base hit.

Gave some good insight into Joe DiMaggio's character; makes me want to learn more about this very human hero. Jerome Charyn makes even this devoted Red Sox fan want to read "Joe DiMaggio: the Long Vigil" and gift it to all the special guys in my family.
