Six different models of American Locomotive Company and Canadian counterpart Montreal Locomotive Works diesels idle away on a cold September night in the Lackawanna Valley.

This is of course on the incomparable Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad in Scranton, PA.

A trained ear can hear the differences between the washing-machine sounding 251 Prime Mover and the burbling and clanking 244.

The videos aboard the locomotives were taken with prior permission, and such actions should not be duplicated without receiving this same permission. All other instances are trespassing.

14 September 2009, Lackawanna Limited video, licensing with permission.

  • Most railraods fell victim to always leaving engines idle, a bad policy, especially on EMDs. They figured that fuel was cheaper than maintaining/buying batteries. Oft times on SP, if an engine cut out, you couldn't restart it because the batteries were either sulphated or the posts were corroded.

  • somebody told me that in Mexico NdeM used to leave their diesels idling all night, i dint believe so but i guess in Canada they do the same? any one?

  • They keep them running all night?
