This 4-minute instructional video gives tips for playing a simplified version of Peter Gabriel's song Solbury Hill on the guitar. This simplified version uses no bar chords.

There are many excellent renditions of the song in its full glory here on YouTube.

The ones I love most include

  • why was the song in midi?

  • @snower5554 Thanks for asking. The midi version emphasizes the melody line where listeners can focus more on notes rather than which instruments are making those notes.

  • question, i only know guitar by numbers. i dont know the actual chord for each fret & string, is there a tab i can use to follow your instruction ?>

  • thanks for asking. sorry, i don't know tab, but maybe someone else can fill in the tab numbers for what i'm playing.

  • thanks, vallejo41. good tip.

  • thanks for asking, francis85. you're probably right. i wanted to keep the instruction as simple as possible, so people who don't own a capo could still learn to play the melody.

  • great job! very clear explanation, easy for anyone to follow. :-)

  • Thank you for your instructions...I managed the first two parts and I can only get the B, C, D, F, G, E, F, E and D. But I'm a beginner so is there any chance you could post the tablature from C chord? As I've tried watching this again and again but you move your fingers too fast!

I'd be very grateful as this is my favourite song of all time and I would love to play it like you.

    Thanks.

  • I started off by thinking "jesus not a clue" then left thinking that was " that was Sound" with a smile on my face. nice post, i'll give it a try mate.

  • Thank you :) really helpful video :)

  • pretty cool dude

  • thank you very much!!!

  • Thanks for the video.

  • Thanks for showing the easy how to. I know know how to put the Hammer On! but I would like the rest of the song after the c chord. Could you post the rest of the basic melody?
