In this video I'll document a common problem with the Sony DCR-HC28 Handy Cam.

The automated door that opens and closes has stopped functioning. It was working fine. I imported 4 mini DV tapes properly and on the 5th tape it stopped working. I have seen people post on popular camera blogs that if you hit the bottom of the camera with your hand you can get it to close. This did not work for me. I hope to take it apart and see if I can tinker with it to get it working again. If I have any luck I will post the solution in a new video and put the link above.

  • It's the mode gear, you have to take the transport apart and clean the contacts on the gear, not easy, fixed a few of them.

One way to get it to work holding it firmly with one hand and hitting the bottom of the cam hard 3 or 4 times-plugged it back in and it sure work temporary

  • @RetroPCDOS Have you done this repair successfully on similar cameras or the exact make & model I have here? (Sony DCR-HC28) If so please let me know what you learned in the process. What tools did you use? Do you have any pictures documenting the process? I'd love to learn more about your technique sop I can do it myself. Thanks!

  • idiot, you have to push down the mode gear, THATS IT MAN, u dont have to buy anything

  • @dartfotovideo I wish it was that easy. That was one of the first things I tried. You must have watched a"Repair Sony Camcorder Error code C:32:11 Mini DV HDV temporally" posted by johnhnmyk on June 19 2010.

  • @RetroPCDOS Thanks for the info! If I feel ambitious I may give it a shot. I don't really care if I mess up the camera. I like trying new things and learning about electronics the DIY way. Let me know if you get around to making a video. I will definitely subscribe and watch it. Thanks again!

  • @RetroPCDOS

I do a video when I get another one, because it's a common problem. Did a video for a Canon, but not Sony yet. But you sure leave this one for a good camcorder tech in your area. i am going to do a listing on eBay very soon offering the repair service. Right now just buying them to fix and resell, as I buy all kind of different camcorders mainly video 8, hi8 and digital 8 and refurbished them, replace any worn parts and cleaning,as I get parts directly thur Sony.or Canon

  • @RetroPCDOS You will see two black gears toward the head assy on the left side, the mode gear is the top gear, you see one screw hold it in, remove it and rememeber where that arrow is pointing, clean the contacts and relube the contacts, you can by precision lube pen at radio shack. Then put back togetheir in reverse, keeping the carriage in the eject position, you need a broken miniDV tape to help you align it, it very important to keep the arrows align right, otherwise timing will be off.

  • @RetroPCDOS Then you will see a gear the moves the reel to forward and reverse in the center of both reels their a screw on the other side that has to be remove and the screw the holds the brake for the forward reel has to be remove, then their two screws that hold the transport togetheir by the silde on the backside that has to be remove then you can slide the top reel assy out, just remember where the arrows on the gears are pointing, this is for timing.

  • @BigNate84

Fix that model a couple of time, requires taking the whole camcorder apart, you have to remove main PCB and then the transport, for tools all you need is a precision screwdriver set with a 00 bit, usually use a piece of paper and label where all the screws came from, so you don't mix the size a camera will help to.

The mode gear the the problem is located by the head toward the left side, you have to take the eject carriage out, then the plate for the s reel out.

  • @retep10108 Thanks I appreciate the subscription. Let me know if you are able to get it working.
