Ride Hamilton shows the FIFTH intense video excerpt from his in-progress Hurricane Katrina Documentary. The only tapestry of stories filmed LIVE as it was and STILL IS happening. It covers in tragic, emotional, and honest detail - everyday of the storm from DAY ONE to TODAY.

THIS PODCAST:
We see the flooded neighborhoods of New Orleans as they sit for weeks and even months. Cars and houses emerge from the oily brown waters like ghosts or monuments as the flood slowly drains away.

Then in late October, the 9th Ward is closed off to residents, and they are forced to ride buses on a pre-destined route just to see the remnants of their neighborhoods, many not being able to even see their homes.

In lesser destroyed areas, with fewer dead bodies, though still a 99.9% loss - some residents, Black and White - are allowed to gather the few belongings they can fight from the mud.

We realize, nearly every single neighborhood, in nearly every single city, in nearly every single region Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit, is wiped out.

Of these, we explore Plaquemines, Arabi, Lakeview, Gentilly, and of course the 9th Ward. Families such as the St. Maries, are forced to paint their names and address on their two-story house, now one-story, when it ends up blocks away and in the middle of a four-lane highway. This is so insurance and other agents can identify the house, and in weeks, bull-doze it and haul it away to the massive debris mountains growing everywhere.

9th Ward residents start to tell Ride of their days of ordeal before and after rescue: being trapped in trees with children beneath the intense sun, being left on bridges en masse, and not having drinkable water or even a cracker to put on their stomach...

ABOUT THE FILM MAKER:
Ride Hamilton was the only photo-journalist to never evacuate - and stay living and participating in the New Orleans community throughout Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the electricity-less, water-less, and MRE, heat, and mosquito-filled months afterwards. While instantly becoming a citizen first-responder and the French Quarter medic the moment Katrina left on August 29, he interviewed everyone he came across. Everyone from victims in canoes, to New Orleans Firefighters on rescues and eventually dead body searches. These are their stories. The stories of heroes and victims, and what really happened and is still happening.

  • Evacuated to Hammond , prepared , food Ice, Generator, etc. Most people who stayed also had prepared. and suffered just a little wind damage untill Levees broke water rose so fast all they could save was their lives. I Was NW of NOLA had to clear streets of trees with Chainsaws to get out, drove150 miles for Gas & Ice, etc. Power out for as long as it was and complete destruction of all services for miles around thats hard to prepare for.

  • Hamilton's documentary is well filmed, crisp and full of details. Filmed from a survivor's perspective, this is an artfully balanced blend of news reporting and neighborly compassion.

I liked the film maker's choice of background music.

  • how could bush be so dumb that he "didnt know this happened"

    this was pre planned.

  • @flawlessjamz281 It's inspiring that you people are still allowed access to the internet.

  • @mindiree well the goverment sent BUSES for people and they chose to say so NO it does not make me ignorant it makes me think were the hell did there common sense go thats what i want to know...

  • @rawrazor123

ignorant. you have no idea what you're talking about. it's easy to say those things when you're sitting in your house watching this on video and not experiencing it. yes, it seems simple but most things are not as simple as the seem. and the fact that you can watch this and not only think but post something so negative and judgmental rather than be compassionate speaks volumes for your character.

  • fag!

  • someone said they had no means to get out, all I can say is whatever !!!!! GOD gave them two feet right, as far as handicapped ppl, what do you think the odds are that they DIDNT know anyone that didnt have a car ?? pretty slim I would have to say. It was there choice to stay behind , I feel very sad about the destruction for there homes, but as far as ppl dying, that was pretty senseless. 2 feet ppl 2 feet.
