Young workers move quickly from modern, clean dormitories to huge mess halls and then to their jobs on the assembly lines, making everything from Apple's iPad and iPhone, to Dell computers, and products for Hewlett Packard and Sony.
More than 300,000 people sleep, eat and work here. There are three hospitals, a fire station, supermarkets and restaurants all crammed on less than a square mile (2.3 square kilometers.)
But something here is not right -- an alarming number of workers have taken their lives or attempted suicide. So far this year, 10 people have committed suicide, while three others have tried, according to Foxconn, a Taiwanese firm and local authorities, and no one knows why.
"We're asking ourselves the same question," said company spokesman, Liu Kun. "Foxconn has never seen anything like this before in the past 20 years of operating on the mainland. We've checked the work records and couldn't find any direct link between the working conditions and the suicides."
While the number of suicides is below China's average rate of 14 per 100,000, according to the World Health Organization, it is enough to worry some of Foxconn's customers. Apple, Dell, Hewlett Packard and Sony have all ordered their own investigations.

  • America is a hypocrite . . we want a fair and honest wage in good conditions for everyone, except china

  • @MrCohibaboy it's not his fault ... It's the fault of all big computermanufacturer like HP, DELL, Acer, Samsung and many others..... First use your brain then start talking

  • boycott those products

  • @hanvo216 hahah right so i'll just drop out and then i'll make it like that list of 7 people, i'm suuuure that will work out great in todays economy. maybe you should use some of your own 'stats' and see what percent of drop outs end up billionaires like those few :) they also made all their money before todays financial climate. i think i'll take the R&D internship i'm already guarantee'd with intel or google :) have fun defending people on the internet who would sell you for a penny!

  • @Marveh good luck mate, your degree doesnt mean shit. successful people all dropped out of school. Bill gates, mark zuckerberg,Li Kha Shing, Stanely Ho,Sean Parker,Paul Allen,Richard Branson, And your degree in computer science lol . All computer pros and hackers are self taught . Your the scum that wasted thousands getting a piece of paper thats useless

  • @hanvo216 maybe i'm upset that theres people of your level of ignorance living on the same planet as me. you can call me scum all day, doesn't make it true, i've gone to some of the best schools in my country, and have a good family and a nice home. i dont involve myself in any 'scum' related activites. so i'll say 'fuck' all i please. I notice you've given up on your defense of foxconn. humor me, and read the NY times article, you might learn something, i bid you farewell, and get fucked :)

  • @Marveh you get upset and start swearing in you replies just show how intelligent you are. typical scum that gets stirred up real easy

  • @hanvo216 I live in Ireland, currently studying computer science at a university with many links to industry, e.g. google, intel, microsoft, ibm, etc. etc. etc, in Ireland, we have research and development facilities/ european marketing headquarters etc.. not these 'factories' which are more like slave labour camps. why would i spend 4 years in university to work all day everyday for nothing.... maybe thats what happens where your from but not here.

  • @hanvo216 oh and dont start going on about believing the media, ofcourse theres outlets of the media that are full of shit, infact a lot of it is, but to anyone with the slightest amount of intelligence its clear when they're reporting for their own agenda, and when its just factual news. what does the new york times have to gain about a story about a taiwanese corporation?
