generator vanOn Thursday 7 July 2011 LNER A4 Pacific 4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" arrived in Gloucester station from London via Swindon and Stroud en route to Cardiff. This locomotive as in fact 60019 "Bittern" in disguise, the BR green livery having been replaced by LNER Garter Blue, the wheels restored to red and the valencing over them replaced. The purported 4492 also hauled a second tender to increase its water capacity and thereby minimise the stopping needed on the hundreds of miles being covered on the bright summer's day. As such, it recalled 4472 "Flying Scotsman" running with a similar second tender in the early 1970s.Electricity for lighting, cooking and other onboard services came from a generator located in a carriage part way down the train. It will also be noted how gingerly the driver started the heavy train west out of Gloucester. No slipping at all, compared with Bittern's visit of 2009!

  • Thank you for your comments and also your footage from Clapham Junction! Someonoe ought to put everyone's YouTube footage of the day together and make a documentary on the Cathedrals Express!

  • That was a nice film of a good departure. Well done the driver. When the engine slips it does a lot of damage to the motion and valve-gear and the track. Good to see some solid driving. I filmed DNZ passing Clapham Junction. Take a look/comment. Thanks for letting us see DNZ at Gloucester. Good stuff.

  • That confirms my suspicions, We got to the footbridge just before Newport tunnels at 18.25pm, She was supposed to come through at 18.33pm and having my two year old with us, I didnt want to hang around with him getting bored.

As I suspected, we got ther too late, shame, it would have been good to get some footage with her in blue.

Never mind, there is a lot of her on youtube thanks to the great photographers out there.

    Thanks for the info. :-)

  • Went to see her in Newport on the way back but I guess she was early as I missed her, "gutted!"

  • I heard her from my house, and I was too late to see her. D:
