Hi, I was wondering if there is any precautions to choosing wood for whittling to make pipes, spoons, etc. I know that some woods are considered toxic but I'm not sure if this means I need to learn to identify all different types of trees for safety reasons before I start learning bushcraft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

@pkryane6 Ok, thanks!

@HaloHedgehog22 You don't need to sterilize anything. Your immune system needs practice and if you don't expose yourself to germs and bacteria, you will become very susceptible to illness

"Making Wooden Spoons" DVD is a how-to DVD that I produced that shows how to make wooden spoons in your wood shop using standard power tools without lathing or hand carving. It is available at Amazon.com

i dont know for that just put some lindsteil oil on the finished product.u gotta protect the wood

Is there any way to sterilize it then?

Look for birch.
Saw it into smaller pieces.
Chop off the hard inner core (merrow?) with an axe.
Draw the form of a spoon on your piece of wood.
Do the primary shaping with the axe, the finer work with an knife.

I'm going back to my island this summer. Most likely I will be accompanied by a whole crew of friends this time.
After the 15th of august there should be a lot new stuff online.
If I find some time before that I'll put some stuff filmed on location here in Belgium online ;-)
