make sure your getting on plane it can be a bit hard with only 7.5hp and make sure you carb is tuned and weight is low

where are the high and low speed mixtures set at on yours? i just got my 7.5 runing and dont know where to put them.

They vary from day-to-day. After working on a motor, I set them at about 3/4 to 1 turn out from bottom. Then (on a boat) I run at high speed and get that jet set for best performance. Then, I slow down and play with the slow speed. However, a great setting for high speed can leave the engine loading up or lean spitting at low speed. I often find myself changing the high setting as I slow down. I know this is not a clear answer, but there is no perfect setting for these.

now that i got it running better i cant get it into gear. what do you think the problem could be?

Could be a few things. The nuts holding the shift rod to the lever (under the powerhead) may have vibrated loose and the lever is just flopping in the breeze. If the pivot pin was taken out ( phillips head screw on the bottom of the gearcase), it could have been put in below the shift cradle, missing its hole. That would let the shift lever move, but the gear clutch dog wouldn't. Also, a broken shock absorber in the lower unit might do it, but usually if that happens, the gearcase binds up.
