trace back from your known relatives(grandparents etc.)using birth, death and, marriage certificates,also baptism and census records.
this way you can find definitive answers and not just a bunch of possibly true stories.
My father used this method to trace our direct patriarchal line to 1100 ad and much farther on other braches of the family tree.

Keeter originated for the Irish name Keating its likely that the 3 brothers your Grandfather talked of were English born into a family of Irish descent so your Ancestry is likely English & Irish .

I'm scandinavian but anyways, i think Keeter sounds like a typical gaelic name that has changed during the centurys, the spelling has probably changed because of english influences on Ireland. Do not sound Norman or anglican or sachsen to me. More celtic then german or nordic. I could be wrong but that is what i think :)
