The Detroit Lions Have a Killer - Not that kind. And not Barry Sanders. But still. The Esquire Monday Night Football Recap from a man who knows his running backs.

By Jeff Pearlman

A NEW-OLD STAR /// Jahvid Best, who ran for 163 yards on Monday, is anything but pretty. Which is kind of the point.

As I watched the final quarter of last night's Bears-Lions game, one name kept popping in my head: Billy Sims.

Clearly, these Detroit Lions — who thrashed Chicago, 24-13 — aren't your father's Lions. Or your grandfather's Lions. Or your great-grandfather's Lions. They are (gasp!) good. Strong. Powerful. Young. Confident. Joyful.

But even though comparisons to past editions are hard to make, one is repeated over and over and over and over: the similarities between anyone running the ball for Detroit, and Barry Sanders.

Jahvid Best is the most recent to suffer from the damnation of being hailed as the team's latest, greatest halfback, and after his dazzling 12-carry, 163-yard evening, the talk will only increase. Like Sanders, Best is small. Like Sanders, best is shifty. Like Sanders... well, that's about it.

Truth be told, if we want to compare Best to someone, it should be Sims, the Lions's outstanding halfback who, from 1981-84, was one of the NFL's two or three best runners. Though Best lacks Sims's size (the former Oklahoma star was six feet and 212 pounds), he runs with a similar ferocity. Watching Best last night — and watching him throughout the season — reminds me that it's not usually about shiftiness so much as intensity. Is a man willing to slam his body into a 350-pound lineman? Is he afraid to use his elbows and forearms as weapons?
