This storm kicked up on Nov. 25th, 2009 during a dive trip to Cozumel. We had done one tank already that day and were about 3 minutes from going back in for our second tank of the day. The skipper decided the seas were too rough to put divers in the water.
According to reports, there were 6-8 foot waves and gusts of wind over 35 miles an hour. The rain was coming down in buckets, sideways. Our boat was all over the place, tanks and weights were coming loose and flying all over the cockpit, etc. This video honestly does not do it justice...it felt much rougher than it looks. There were lots of very concerned looks on our boat.
I've spent a lot of time on the water in my life and this was the roughest water I've ever experienced. Four or five boats went down during the storm, although there were no reports of any death or serous injury. Our boat (the Atlantis, I think, operated by Dive Paradise) did fine, thanks to gutsy and masterful work by our captain and crew.
The storm cleared quickly and we did a beautiful sunset beach dive in relatively calm water.
