Retold (Serein Limited) (2010)

Nest (no/uk) is the collaborative project of Otto Totland (Deaf Center / Type Records) and Huw Roberts (Serein). The two started working together after forging a strong friendship as former members of the Miasmah label.

Both pianists, there is little wonder that after exploring a plethora of musical styles, the two find themselves most at home writing traditionally structured pieces, with the ivories a major element throughout. Their music demonstrates clearly the innate ability the two have for song writing, borrowing from the world of film soundtracks and contemporary classical composers to craft delicate instrumental compositions.

Alongside their favoured instrument can be variously heard the plucked strings of the Welsh harp, violins, woodwind instruments, field recordings, percussion and a heady dose of mind wobbling effects. From the time Nest began writing together, one purpose was clear; to produce beautiful music free of pretense, and they do it exceptionally well.

Discography:
The first six tracks on their new album 2010 "Retold" were originally released in 2007 on the eponymously titled Nest EP; they are presented here again having been remastered alongside five new pieces which composed in 2009.

"Retold" is as much in common with experimental electronic music as it does with modern classical composition.

  • Really nice music... But this is not the finnish Nest. There are actually many bands called "Nest" and this one (from the UK) is often mistaken for the finnish act. Still great...

  • @Astraios91 Thanks man,my fault.

  • @shakalski My apologies. The label is actually called NORTHERN KIDS REPUBLIC, a sub-label of Home Normal. Thanks for your suggest of Field Rotation, I was not familiar with it but will definitely look into that!

  • @BubblemintSky Thanks for the info. However if you're more into the dark ambient style (which i think suits Nest a little more)...i'd recommend having a look at Field Rotation. Could you give a bit more info on this label you speak of? I tried looking, but could not find anything on it. Thanks again.

  • Yea there seems to be at least two artists/groups called Nest. Nest from the UK who make ambient music and Nest from Finland who makes some kind of new age.

  • @ibelongtotheskies1 You might want to look into Nils Frahm's music. I just picked up his latest FELT and I have to say it quite similar in sound. If you like the tranquil quality this music evokes, try listening to the artists on NORDIC KIDS REPUBLIC label.

  • A mountain, A tree, Evening: road ahead

  • Nice song and image.

  • This is by far the superior Nest. The Nest from Finland sucks.
