This was the strongest Long Program at the 1992 Olympics in technical merit. He did 8 clean Triples; no other competitor could manage more than 6 (none of the medal winners even had more than 5). Look at the ridiculous marks he receives!
I am so glad I saw this posted. I was 10 years old when this happened and it turned me off figure skating for life. He was ridiculously good in this program, and I remember thinking with my dad what a great story how he is going to get a medal. And then those bullshit scores came down, because he hadn't "put" in his dues. So they just gave away scores to the old heads like Browning, Petrenko, etc just because of their reputation. Highway robbery.
I dont see anything wrong with his marks. He was marked highly for technical merit and deserved it, but then marked down for presentation which at this point in his career was also deserved.
Wylie was the only skater that had a great Long Program in terms of presentation. Petrenko became lethargic in the second half of his performance and Barna's program was simply BAD. Bowman was good, but nowhere near his best. These Olympics were simply very disappointing for the men. Nobody was truly outstanding. Elvis was definitely behind a lot of the other skaters in terms of what he could do artistically, but he did his best and everyone else skated VERY FAR below their full potential.
Wylie did have a couple good spins but he made a lot of mistakes a program that already had lesser jump content than this one. Speed is not part of technical merit either, that's presentation. So, again, I'd love to see your tech mark for that program.
No, his leg is hip level. He drops it when he is going to exit or change the position. And if you would have punished other skaters then it's all the same and doesn't matter. It just means their marks should have been even lower. The person who won the Gold Medal at this event did 5 Triples and got higher marks. Pretty dumb...
If his spins were subpar then what were everyone else's?? LOL. Nobody during this time period had great spins in their Long Programs, with exception to a scratch spin at the very end of a program that would sometimes turn out well. I would love to see your technical marks for the other competitors at this competition if you give this a 5.7 .
I'm not sure if it's the vid or u-tube but i can barely hear the sound... the music anyway.
