What is missed here is that the basic thesis of statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) is wrong. Although cholesterol may be high in some individuals with heart disease, it is not the cause of the disease, it is the result. It's like blaming roosters crowing for the sun coming up each morning. Guilt by association does not constitute proof enough for millions of people to get on the statin band wagon. their dangers far outweigh their possible benefits.
Cholesterol is a biochemical essential to life. If it is not consumed in the diet it will be produced by the body.
The number one disease killer in this country is heart disease. All the drugs, all the aspirin, calcium blockers, nitrates, ACE inhibitors, stress tests, angiograms, angioplasty, and bypass surgery has not changed that. For eons humans ate high fat, high cholesterol diets and did not get heart disease to any extent. Only with the industrial era and its processed foods, sedentary life style, and symptom-based medical system has the disease risen to epidemic proportions.
If there should be any guilt by association, there it is.
