Without the dancers and singers, the music is one dimensional and stagnant. Also, jazz and the hand drums are totally integrated since the re-establishment of the separated cousins back in the thirties and forties.

My good fortune was to be living in Boston Massachusetts where we had Black American, Puerto Rican, Cuban, African, and South American players available to us. My first teachers were Babatunde Olatunji, Nuru Defina, Syd Smart, and Ibrahima Camara. Plus the many other brothers and sisters who I played with on the streets and gigged with. Also, there were the dancers and singers that completed the mosaic.

It's one of many ways to explain guaguanco because there are many subtle stylistic and cultural differences. Plus there are the original African styles that are played by one djembe master. And each must seek that style that is available to them. I am a senior and am fascinated by the spread of this knowledge over the Internet that in past was only available to those who had local drum subcultures.
