I found part of this clip elsewhere, but missing Cash's extended spoken introduction. I hate to sound like a college nerd (because I'm not, I just married one), but the additional context his remarks add make the song even more impressive to me. This was from the February 17, 1971 episode of his show, by which time the Suits had forced him to start doing "theme" shows. This is from the best of the bunch, "Johnny Cash On Campus," which also featured Neil Young and James Taylor. It's super cool to Cash introduce what would go on to become his signature song to zero crowd applause. It's like hearing a recording of Zepplin play "Stairway..." to audience indifference before the album was released. Shiver me timbers!
Love this!!!!! Thank you so much for posting it. Makes me tear up a little.

Thank you for posting this. I've always had a soft spot for Johnny Cash, even though I'm not a big fan of country -- mostly for his somber. almost ghostly voice, but also his chugging churning music. I became a huge fan when he put out "A Boy Named Sue" as it showed a willingness not to be so "country" after all. And there's this song, one of the greatest ever. And to see the standing "o" and hear how he came to write it... Perfect. Thanks again.

to get a standing ovation for a song you just finished that morning before the show, it just shows how great not only the song is, but also how great the singer is.
