J.S.Bach-Sinfonia of Cantata BWV 29 (GNG Organ Transcription)

This is my organ transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach's Sinfornia for Cantata BWV 29 "Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir". I wrote this organ transcription because I wanted to play this piece on the organ and before I realised that there are at least five other organ transcriptions of this piece, chief amongst them Guilmant's version. In my version I have included every single note written down by J.S.Bach so I think that this piece is more technically challanging than most transcriptions of this piece.

I used Finale 2010 to write the notes in. In polyphonic writing when there are two or more sets of voices (or sets of chords) it is difficult to write those different streams of music as one voice, so the red notes are layer two on a specific staff. Each staff can play up to four voices in finale so one could write for up to 12 voices. Therefore, all the notes you see on the screen are played. On measure 134 there are also green notes for a third voice on the top staff line.

@bgcat57 Thanks for your interest and comments.As always,these transcriptions are but guides to the interpreter of the piece.I assumed that this piece would be played on a large reverb cathedral setting so I wasn't too concerned about the staccato effect of m30,m79-82.The jump@m60 is JSB's.m55-56 is a 10-note reach,LH playable, only low A playable on pedal. m133 RH is actually easier to play than it looks.Trill taken as written by JSB. Lastly, the trill in the last few measures is a trill on a 1-3-5 chord as opposed to a single note which would be played alternating (fingering) 1-3-5 and 2-4.

My orchestration teacher once pointed out that in transcription (in any direction) one must consider the aesthetic and emotional intent and not merely the notes.

While maintaining the accuracy of the notes the legato aspect of the line would be lost by the need to make such jumps resulting in a staccato sound. Also the arpeggiating the chords on m55-56 etc. maintains note integrity at the expense of intention of the sound. Many of these may be transferred to the pedal line.

The extra notes in the right hand part in m133 should be in the left hand (particularly if the keyboards have different stops set.)

This is a very good transcription. Certainly better than some of the transcriptions available. There are a few points I would make though. In striving for accuracy of notes there are some sections where it would be very difficult or awkward to play mostly in the left hand part. (e.g. m30, the first 2 eighths in the first beat of the left hand, is an awkward jump, as on m60 and m79-82.) continued...
