ever use steel wool instead of high grit sandpaper? im new to lathes but have often used 000-00000 steel wool to make fine finishes on wood works

I often do use steel wool of that kind of grade between coats of finish becasue it won't scratch it quite like sandpaper does. I do usually use high grit papers for rubbing out the lacquer.

im buying a lathe and i was wondering. when you first started was it HARD to get the shapes and nice beads? because i never used one. also if i only have a faceplate dos that mean that i cannot turn with the tail stock thingy off? thanks preston

In the begining it can be harder to creat small little beads like this but it is perfectly possible. Hollowing it where it gets a little trickyer. With a faceplate you can remove the tailstock because you fix it using screws, you just have to make sure you don't end up turning into the screws. I have done several videos showing using a faceplate so check those out.
