My thoughts on Prop 1 passing, narrowly, in my home state, my birth state of Maine. I forgot to say:
We Bracketts were one family of the original settlers of Falmouth Neck (now Portland) in the late 1600's.
I am also the grandson of a Maine State Senator, Joseph G. Arzonico of Yarmouth. The point is gayness is not an aberration, an other, a Them, or a sign of moral turpitude. It is part of the fabric of our society and appears in all parts of society.

  • I think you are a great person who is just misguided. I'm sorry I just believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Too bad this issue is extremely divisive.

  • Actually I am not at all misguided. Please get to know me before making such an assumption. What can be said of unresearched pronouncements? I support your right to believe and live and practice as you do. I believe that you and I, disagreeing as we do, deserve laws and government that treats us equally. I will never force our government to tax you and tell you what you cannot do with your love or your beliefs. America is great because disagreeing people can live with legal equanimity and peace

  • I'm all too glad you're optimistic about this. Many people I've seen talking on blogs are fed-up with the repeated losses to the gay civil rights movement and just want to move to Canada. It seems like such a bad idea; by moving out of the country you are abandoning the fight here, abandoning the advancement of civil rights, to get an instant "get out of jail free card" so to speak. I know some gay couples have been waiting 20 or more years to be legally married, but c'mon.

  • I think you are correct. I feel optimistic because 1) when fighting a battle, do not become attached. Perform your duty to your best with singular focus. This is what God teaches in the Bhagavad Gita. (couldn't resist putting it that way).

Plus, the human species is liberalizing, year by year, decade by decade. Our distinctive mind allows a change in our behavior as we evolve. The trend is liberal. So I know it is only a matter of time. I am relaxed in the sureness of our evolution.

  • I for one am glad to meet another person dedicated to preserving our history.

  • I wonder if there was an organized or conscious effort by the English to single out the Two Spirit people. There was with the Conquistadors in Central America when they arrived. The two-spirit shamans were killed "for heresy" in each village. Good to note.. they were in EACH village.

  • Sigh.

  • The majority of scientific opinion leans toward it being more genetic with some developmental aspect than strictly developmental. Either way it is understood to be an innate quality of 5% to 10% of humanity. I have not found any scientific reports of it being a choice.

  • The whole issue lies in whether people are born gay or not. If people are born gay, then it is a right. If not, then it is not a right.

  • I love you're energy. Thanks for keeping your chin up. I also am related to a few historical figures; the Hersey's from Penn., a couple of people on the mayflower, the guy that came up with the red paint for coke bottles and some Amish folk. Even the Amish have gays. And yes, some of them are ok with the gay, while others aren't. Human is as human does.

  • I know it does for me, though I prefer him putting it in my mouth.

  • Our natural state of grace will prevail. We are united brother. Cheers.
