PART 1 - HELMSLEY TO RIEVAULX
Back in the eighties my friends and I did a lot of long distance walks like the Coast to Coast, Pennine Way, Dales Way etc.
In May 1984 I made a video of the Cleveland Way, carrying round a large Panasonic VHS camera outfit.
This is the beginning of the walk - we started at 1:00 pm from Helmsley.
My companions were: Gordon Simey who died in 1993 from the asbestos he had absorbed in the York Carriage Shops of BR, and Bill Brown, whom we don't see these days since he left home. We all worked for British Telecom at the time and usually took a week's leave in May each year to follow our hobby.
This walk took several days... Al.

n.b. This complete video of the Cleveland Way was filmed and edited on VHS tape in 1984, 23 years ago!

n.b. Part 2 - Rievaulx to Osmotherley has been removed due to copyright claims by Warner Bros.

  • Sad to say Part 2 had been deleted due to snatch of Dire Straits' Walk the Walk being included in the sound track.

I must redo the video one day when I have the time.

  • So where is Bill Brown these day? Btw how many miles per day did you average?

  • 1. Left his wife and kids for another woman and he's no Brad Pitt!

    2. 110 miles in 7 days = about 16 miles per day.

  • I enjoyed this little video immensely. It brought back so many memories seeing places I used to visit as a child. The sheer tranquillity of the countryside was very moving. Thank you for posting.

  • I am watching your diaries with great interest ... a fellow walking enthusiast i will be walking the Cleveland Way at the end of April 2008 in 9 days ... our first evening meal will be at the Hambleton Inn ... thank you for posting

  • Great video, good that you preserved it. I used one of those heavy VHS camcorders myself years ago, the ones that take a regular VHS tape.

Cows don't seem to mind at 2:55. When I'm out walking I'm very wary of fields with cows, is there any need to be?

  • I have just completed the Cleveland Way. It has taken me 16 years!

  • @snortbrick - Well I live in Darlington but when I was a child my parents used to take us here often.

  • Forgot to mention...Whitby, England (a town along the Cleveland Way) is a sister city of Anchorage. Discovered that when hiking through Whitby along the Cleveland Way. It was on a postcard found in a shop there. Thanks for this video...brings back such fond memories.

  • Loved this hike (November of 1994 after hiking the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path of Wales--another good one). There is a a Captain Cook statue in downtown Anchorage, Alaska where I grew up.
