@fluorescentcentipede: Actually no, Christianity was embraced by many educated people in the classical world, the Greeks saw Christianity as a continuation of their philosophies, especially that of Plato, and many would compare Socrates to Christ since both were killed unjustly. The Eastern Roman empire was the only Christian state in the 5th & 6th centuries and the only one to repel the barbarian invasions and preserve its Hellenic and Latin identity for another millennium

@SirBlackoulis You are right those were dark things. The church never should have had the political power that it did. The church is not a state-organization, but an invisible organization of individual believers who worship God in spirit and in truth.

That being said, human history has been dark, and is dark in every year of its existence. But the bias placed by the renaissance "thinkers" would make you dismiss the era as if it wasn't an era of advancement. Not true.
