While Jack is getting a haircut he reads in the newspaper that Irene Dunne is making a new movie and Vincent Price will be the leading man. Jack remarks that he just had lunch with director Gregory Ratoff last week and the subject never came up.

Jack decides that he wants Price's role and pays Mr. Ratoff a visit. Mr. Ratoff is stunned at the thought of Jack taking Price's role and makes that clear to Jack. Jack is not to be deterred easily however and calls Irene Dunne to try to persuade her to give him the role. He finally cajoles his way into attending a rehearsal at Miss Dunne's house that night.

Jack arrives at Miss Dunne's house and receives a chilly reception from Vincent Price as well as Dunne and Ratoff. During the rehearsal, Jack does everything he can to create distractions as Dunne and Price read their lines. In fact, he does this so well that the whole project can only have one ending.

  • You're welcome, 'hwy'. Must have been the summer heat...incidentally, this episode was originally done as a March 1944 sketch on "THE LADY ESTHER SCREEN GUILD PLAYERS" ["Ham For Sale"], with Jack, Basil Rathbone, Barbara Stanwyck and Jean Hersholt, and again on Jack's own radio show in February 1949 with Vincent Price, Claudette Colbert and Fletcher Markle. If Benny liked a certain sketch, you could be sure he'd "update" and revive it over the years....

  • I know that heat well :)

  • What do you think you've been posting, 'hwy'? The majority of the Benny episodes you've graciously presented ARE kinescopes (and WERE originally telecast live)....if it doesn't look like it's on "film", and the curtain is right out front at the beginning before Jack walks on stage- that's a "kinescope". If he also says, "Welcome to 'The Lucky Strike Program'", THAT'S a "kinnie"....

  • You know, I had a feeling I shouldn't post that question. I should listen to those feelings.

Seriously, thanks Barry. I really do appreciate all of your comments.

  • This was one of the first FILMED episodes, 'hwy'. Jack appeared live several times each season, beginning in the fall of 1950; by late '53, he was on every three weeks (the others filled, of course, by "PRIVATE SECRETARY"). Someone suggested he film several of his episodes in advance, so that he could take advantage of having more time off from staging the live TV episodes and "transcribing" his weekly radio show. Jack liked the idea, and about four episodes were filmed in the 1953-'54 season.

  • I wonder if the live episodes are available as kinescopes?

  • This episode originally aired on December 6, 1953.

  • I didn't know this was one of the first television episodes.

  • This was one of the first filmed episodes of the series, produced through the facilities of Jack's old friend George Burns' "McCadden Productions" (who produced and filmed "THE GEORGE BURNS AND GRACIE ALLEN SHOW" at the time), at General Service Studios, where Ozzie & Harriet, Dennis Day, and Joan Davis were also filming their TV series. The announcer in the first commercial is none other than Sandy Becker, who often appeared in Luckies' filmed ads and some of their ads on Jack's radio show....
