ZHANG:
Bangladesh's former prime minister has returned to the country she once led, just in time for the elections. Despite the fact that she was arrested and faces corruption charges, she will still campaign for the prime minister's seat.

STORY:
Former prime minister Sheik Hasina appears to be warmly greeted as she arrives at Dhaka airport - the first time home since she sought medical treatment in the U.S.

It is a somewhat bitter-sweet return, as Hasink faces five corruption cases that saw her detained last year, when an army-backed interim government took control. After spending a year in jail she was granted bail to seek medical treatment abroad.

Elite force troops and hundreds of armed police waited at the airport for her and held back thousands of her supporters, who rushed to enter the airport. Hasina does not seem deterred by the security presence, however, and vows to once again campaign for the prime minister's seat.

She will head home to Dhaka's Dhanmondi area, where she will hold talks with party leaders about how to kick off her election campaign.

The interim government is loosening control to allow political parties to hold gatherings and rallies ahead of the upcoming December 18 election.

Her Swami League party is asking the government to provide maximum security for her. In 2004 she survived a grenade attack at a Dhaka rally, but partially lost her hearing. The attack killed 23 and wounded over 150 people.

Hasina served as prime minister for five years until 2001, when she lost to her arch rival Begum Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
