You are very welcome, ilone. Many people have told me that my book puts them to sleep (not every writer would take this as a compliment). As for the book as a translation, it is not. I called it "a new English version." It is a sometimes very free adaptation, and occasionally consists of variations on the original theme. I didn't translate the Chinese and didn't pretend to. I felt connected to the consciousness called Lao-tzu in a different way, through many years of intensive Zen training.
The commentators below who observe that the Tao cannot be interpreted without knowing the language haven't read it. and if they have, they have sadly missed its messages. To receive a gift, you must recognize that it is there and be open to its acceptance.
@daoist52 The Tao is interpreted through each of us. Knowing Chinese or not knowing it doesn't matter. Looking inside and outside; finding it everywhere is what is important. His particular version is just one viewpoint and I find it to be a very useful one. Perhaps a more traditional viewpoint helps you more but I feel that you should always have an open mind to new ideas.
What's more the work is one which even people who know the language admit is extremely difficult to understand and therefore to translate. If you aren't familiar with other works in that language and the subtext and context, how can you hope to render a good translation? You're just relying on other peoples work and then paraphrasing it.
How do you render a "translation" of a work when you don't know the original language? You have to rely on other translations. However, since you don't know the language, how can you determine which of those translations is a "good" translation?
Stephen Mitchell! Your translation of the tao de ching has been an important companion for me in my tai chi life! Thank you. I have it with me now. It's so readable and accessible. Good to see you on youtube.

Very interesting video. The retreat you mentioned shares similarities with the sojourn Joseph Campbell took early in his career.
