Jim Marggraff, CEO of Livescribe, shows off the 2GB, Java-capable Pulse Smartpen at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco. The pen records audio as the user takes handwritten notes, then synchs up the sound with the writing. Audio can then be played back when someone taps the pen on paper. The device also converts languages instantly, playing translations out loud through the embedded speaker or displaying the word on its LED screen.

  • as great as this product is, i could see schools being a pain in the ass and banning them to protect teacher's privacy rights or some b.s. like that

  • yeah just like banning chewing gums in lessons even though it is scientificaly proven they help in concentration...

  • @BigRedsFro do you need a special paper or a special ink?

  • my friend told me he could play the piano with his pen and paper... i was like... what what u been smoking...? then he actually did it...

  • @mrok555 Yes it can with optional OCR software

  • This thing looks like its going to be a pain in the ass to use

  • @octapusxft: That's purely because people screwed it up for themselves. If gum never made it to the bottom of desks and chairs then chances are, it would be allowed in schools. :\

Like most things, a few bad can easily ruin something for a large number of good people that are going the right thing.
