I have to say, this is hilarious but weird. I recently bought a new hp laptop and my face detection works perfectly. I'm black, but it still works. Maybe there is something wrong with your camera. Please don't take this offensive.

Camera see reflective light :Black absorbs light ,Try Adding a light to Bounce your Beautifull Black Image back ,I always add an extra key light on a dimmer for Darker skinned people to Adjust Exposure properly for the Camera & Viewers, Especial if its black next to white.
(Reflective Light is all metered on a light wave scale ) (Scaled to reflective light values) .
Colours and tones reflect light or absorb light waves .
