Actually Hamilton was already a big name in british motorsport long before his F1 seat. At silverstone in 2006 he got a standing ovation for his drive in the GP2 race. Even people who couldnt actually put a name to the face had heard the pit lane talk about him, due to his numerous karting titles, his F3 title, F3000 title and his GP2 title. He had also had several television appearances documenting his success, not to mention the motorsport press.
