I like this review. Balanced view on gaming, IMO. But I probably think that because I share those views. :-P I was lucky enough to have all the X-Wing games. They were a real joy growing up.
Check out the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade. Also, keep your eyes open, maybe some other cool projects will rise up.
@technicallyabsurd It was pretty easy to mod the game to make the Outrider (and pretty much everything) playable, though. Just open the Shiplist and change it in a text editor.
As for the Executor level... last time I played through, I tried destroying it. If it gets below a certain health level, they send a squad of super ace TIE Avengers at you. Ouch! Still managed to do it somehow (by being cheesy!). :D
You couldn't fly the Outrider, unfortunately...not in the regular game. The big attraction for me was the music in the levels, and how the levels played out, like all the twists that happened (you're going to rescue Aeron from Vergesso, and the freakin' EXECUTOR'S there!) Catching the little references to the big picture (like what happened in the movies) was a big pleasure for me also.

Great game? Or...the greatest game?
