I did a similar thing. I told my firend the Rutles were an actual British Invasion band and he bought it and asked me why all the 60s band looked the same.
-
You should have given him the Hollies version, that sounds more like the Beatles :P

Spacepatrolman, thought your comment was really funny ! I did a similar thing by giving a younger friend a tape i made of the 'Rutles', telling him it was the fabs ! I let it go on for months, hearing his comments etc. When i eventually told him the truth, let's say i wasn't flavour of the month ! However it was an interesting experiment...

I remember Searchers singing this to promote their LP in 1864 or was it 1964? Too old to remember. Great band.

I only knew Betty Everett's Shoop Shoop
Song. We used to do this one in my band, but I didn't know the Searchers did it! Nice!

The Searchers actually improved the song with their lyric "You're not listening to the words I say" over Betty Everett's "You're not listening to all I say". Helen Shapiro picked up on it when she recorded it. Why didn't Linda Ronstadt or Cher?

Probably, because when you think of this song. It's the Betty Everett's version that comes up. I don't think anyone knows The Searchers did this song, unless you play a Searchers CD with this song on it.
