Every 15 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies or is seriously injured in an alcohol-related crash. The Every 15 Minutes program is to educate young teens about the dangers of drinking and driving, but more importantly, to make the right decision when they get behind the wheel. This is a community-based event and involves multiple agencies working together to send the message to students loud and clear. Day 1 involved pulling students from class by the grim reaper and CHP officers where they were then considered living dead students. This was followed by a mock crash scene in front of the school. That evening, the living dead students did not go home. They had no contact with family or friends. The
purpose of this is to feel the effects of losing loved ones. Day 2 involved a mock funeral where students heard stories from parents, members of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, who lost their son to a drunk driver. Students also heard from the law enforcement side of drunk driving. The closing statement from the Assistant Principal challenged the students to make the right decision not to drive when alcohol is involved. Students were given a bracelet to wear to remind them not to drink and drive. Timing was crucial as many students are just getting their driver's license and spring break, prom, grad nite, and graduation are to follow.
