So far I do have very limited experience in biology (college-equivalent) but wouldn't it be accurate to say that evolution actually does apply to non-genetic processes as well, provided those relate to RNA and DNA?

For instance, in something referred to as chemical evolution, structures such as lipid membranes are advantageous and thus passed on without any DNA or RNA required as an information medium.

If I'm wrong, I truly wish to be corrected.

The chemical evolution is when we talk about abiogenesis. It is mostly the laymans term for it.

In truth there is evolution in almost anything.

However, when we talk about evolution. Then we talk about the theory of evolution. Which is only the diversity of life.

@AronRa: Is it considered accurate to explain changes in viruses over time with evolutionary processes, since they are not considered alive? Thank you.

That's actually a great question. I don't wanna step on toes, but I just gotta take a stab @ it
Short answer is "yes".
Longer answer: because viruses carry genetic information & that genetic info is subject to change through various mechanisms, the term "evolution" does apply.

Where things get really murky is when you ask, "Are viruses alive"?
Some *do* "count them among the living".
Some do not.
Better than anything else, they highlight the difficulty of answering the question, "What is life"?

Viruses do not change by themselves and they can't reproduce themselves like bacteria or cells.They must attach themselves to the cell membrane of animals, or cell wall of plants and inject a part of their DNA into the cells of the host organism.

But the question of life the universe and everything has already been answered! It's 42. Just read the wonderful book 'Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy'. 1200+ comments, someone else must have posted the same comment as me...

Sorry, couldn't resist. Love the videos, shame that you have to make them.

@Szriko

That's probably not how it happened.
