back when i was about this age, we set up a similiar lane in our basement....i practiced for my saturday afternoon league at least 3 times a week even using the scoring sheets we used in the era prior to automatic scoring...

Yes, a softball. There were also croquet balls and the very lightweight plastic (hollow) balls that came with the set of pins. The softball got the most realistic reaction, except that it tended to bounce due to the stitching. The hollow plastic balls that came with the toy pins were just too light and deflected way too much. The croquet balls didn't deflect at all, and were a little too small. The size and weight of the softball made it the best choice. Too bad it bounced so much.

Well, yeah. If you'd read the info about the clip, you'd have seen that it was, indeed, shot in 1981.
