This is a restored version of BLISS that was released on 9.5mm Pathex in 1917. The beginning of this version up to the title "Harold has met the Only Girl..." and everything after the intertitle "Five telephone calls in as many hours..." near the end of the film, was taken from the film sold as GIVE AND TAKE on 9.5mm Pathex, but which was in fact just scenes taken from the film BLISS. This version compiles all the footage from both films. The public domain music used on these films was then re-edited to fit this new version. Now enjoy!

  • That was cute! :-D

  • Interesting..first film I've seen where he still has full use of his right hand.

  • Actually, he was probably 24 since he was born in 1893 - depending on what month this was shot. The glass character eased in rather quickly and became rapidly popular as well. Roach was a very rich man already in 1917 traveling abroad. They made a good team, even though they didn't always hit it off so well...

  • Hawold (bou bou) at 23, skinny and breathtaking, is just starting out here with his "glass character". It's still "knockabout" stuff, and though audiences loved it, it ain't no Kid Brother or Safety Last. It amazes me how slowly this character developed, at least over 2 years. Hal Roach must have been incredibly patient, either that or early Harold was a cash cow.

Why do we love him so? Did women sigh over him back then, or just see him as another funnyman like Ben Turpin or Chester Conklin?
