Hanny's Voorwerp [Dutch for Hanny's object] is a strange deepspace nebula discovered in 2007 by Dutch teacher Hanny van Ankel via the on-line Galaxy Zoo Project. The first scientific observation are now being reported via observations from some of the world's biggest telescopes at many wavelengths.
The nebula is inordinately faint and with giant amateur 48" scope in the States, the brightest star formation region [nearest galaxy IC 2497] is just glimpsed. Vid includes my first images from my London backyard observatory. Despite severe light pollution Hanny's Object is just recorded!

  • when you say large amateur scopes can see what size apperture do you need? My friend and I share meade 16 inch lightbridge.

  • @ostrich760 It was a struggle to view with 48" Dob in States [see notes above with vid] but give it a go;-) - good luck

  • I have seen Hanny in a Dutch program as she told her discovery.

I'm proud of her. She is an intelligent woman who speaks good English.

Look at 4:09 (the English interview)
