I really wish there was some mention of MAD creator Harvey Kurtzman here
but that's life.
Without MAD we likely would never have had The Onion, Saturday Night Live,
John Stewart, Steven Colbert etc,
IMHO they're all children of MAD
in one way or another.

Now Mad is a quarterly, and I wonder how that's going to change its content. Even when Gaines was alive they used to feature a movie on the cover, hoping it would attract that audience. The first two quarterly issues didn't do that, not with the issue being on newsstands for several months. Hopefully the humor will become broader, with less sucking up to new trends, as opposed to mocking them the way it used to in its prime. They talk about having to be edgier now, that's never why I read it.

I agree. Mad died when Gaines did. Saturday Night Live is dead too or at least in critical condition. Both of them have become too commercialized and whatnot to be enjoyable anymore. Not to mention the lack of humor.

You're probably right, but I started reading it back in '99, seven years after he died. I loved it when I was 10, and still read all my back issues. Yeah, but MAD was at it's peak and had more integrity when Gaines was around.

I used to read Mad Magazine religiously when I was a kid and to this day it is one of my favorite childhood memories. It's a shame that it went in the toilet after Gaines died.

It's funny how they don't even know their own demographic.

I picked up a copy of a newer Mad magazine at my friends house and I felt sick - like the memory of William Gaines was basically shat upon and cast aside. When I first saw the ads, I assumed they were a joke... I kept looking for the punchline until the horrible truth hit me. Also the new content was like watching MadTV.
I have so much respect for Mr. Gaines. An actual part of me died.

Dentists and Barbers. I read my 1st ever MAD waiting for my dad to get a haircut.

When Don Martin left for Cracked my heart broke.
