One of Raff's best-known pieces, published in 1870. This beguiling study is an old favourite of mine. This is a difficult track to record as it has a continuous texture and cannot be easily divided into sections for editing. There are the odd flaws - a bit of smudged pedalling near the beginning, an occasional blurring of the accompanying figure etc. - but I have long wanted to post a performance of this piece here!

  • Very well done!

Do you have any idea where can I find the sheet music for this lovely piece?

  • @Benerbz8 Thank you. You can find Raff's complete Op. 157 on IMSLP from whence you can freely download it!

  • Thankyou for the huge collection of interesting pieces. Such a pleasure to hear this piece, I love Raff's melodies - do you play the Cavatina or Cachuca Caprice?

  • Thanks for your kind comment. I play both the pieces you mention. I have recorded an arrangement of the Cavatina on YouTube, and I do also play the Cachucha Caprice - although I am not sure (with all the page turns) I could do it successfully for YouTube.

  • Very nice;love Raff's music and magical melodies.

I love the sound of your piano!

  • Thank you for that!

  • Thanks for your comment. I always enjoy playing Raff, and once performed one of the suites at a concert. He also did some interesting transcriptions, filling in some 'gaps' in Liszt's transcription output.

  • Love J J Raff!!! I've all 11 of his symphonies, assorted other orchestral music as well as all of his concertos (piano, violin, cello). It was Michael Ponti's recording of the C Minor Piano Concerto that first turned me on to Raff in the first place - way back in the days of LP's '~' Got Bernard Hermann's rendition of Lenore (Symphony #5) shortly after. Ironically enough, I purchased both in Frankfurt where Raff taught for many years.

  • Thank you - and thank you for watching this video, which I worked hard on!

  • great interpretation and execution.
