A music video I made of the 1995 film "Rob Roy" by director Michael Caton-Jones and screenwriter Alan Sharp.

Runrig ~ Protect and Survive

The red hot sun burns up the hill
The winter's bride, the summer's king
I tramp these acres and I feel
Once upon a time
Then it seemed that everything
You saw and touched and felt was real
You turned the tap and you turned the wheel
Breathing free

Once in a lifetime
You live and love
Once in a lifetime
You die
Once in a moment
The sun goes down
Protect and survive

Now you search the open evening skies
Trace the memory in your eyes
For the prophet's hard rain and the deluge
Lie in tears around your door
Once there were trees and livestock here
A mother's love, the warnings clear
But you chose to turn away from fear
Breathing free

(Chorus)

Protect and survive
Protect and survive

Now there's a faceless cross on a distant hill
A wasted voice, a silent scream
Where the lovers loved and the dreamers dreamed
You stand and dream alone
You took your sacrifice to the gods of war
Traded your children's lives for a mess of gold
And you beat your ploughshares into swords
Breathing free

(Chorus)

  • Might I ask what version of this song this is? I'm slightly obsessed with it.

  • @AlyssaRae29

It's on an album called "Scotland's Pride: Runrig's Best". Not sure if it was released in all countries though. There is no indication in the booklet that the version is different. I like it better than the original version 'cause it has an 'earthier' feel to it :)

  • Awful!!

  • @rouseg7 What a very argumentative, detailed & enlightening comment.

  • How did you even find this song? It's perfect....

I mean, the lyrics are perfect...the upbeat music is a little happy, but great vid!

  • Thank you very much :) I'm a big fan of both the band Runrig and the film Rob Roy, so I noticed the similarity. Apart from that, the disintegration of Highland society is just something many artists have commented on in different media.

  • @amberbernstein I do agree with you about the "earthier" :) feel to it and I come back to this video to listen to it every day. Unfortunately I cannot find this version of the song anywhere in the U.S., so this is my only source to listen to it.

  • Great job mate, keep up the good work!

  • I love this version of the song, even though I can't find it anywhere. It all fit in just too perfectly with the video.

  • @amberbernstein I try to keep my comments as simple as the idiotic idea of ruining good film work with dumb brain rock music.

  • 1:28-1:30 lol he just killed the men and he run like nothing happens
