Why Atheists Are Right - God Doesn't Really Exist

Adam explains why atheists are correct when they claim that God doesn't "exist." God does not exist in the material world. God doesn't have a body that we can examine. God transcends the material world. When Jews and Christians have claimed God is part of the material world, they have called it idolatry. The 5th century theologian Dionysius the Areopagite claimed that God created all that exists, but does not in fact "exist." Thomas Aquinas said something very similar in the 12th century. God's does not exist on our realm of being, but is present in the world. This is important because Christians claim that God is love. God loves even God's enemies, and so, as not part of the material world, doesn't get caught up in human violence.

So, God created the universe from nothing, didn't God? If God is Love, why does God send people to Hell? And why is God jealous?

@DCHOGYOJI1 Great questions. There are passages in the Bible that many interpret as saying God doesn't send people to hell; that instead, God is bringing about the reconciliation of all things. See Acts 3:21 and 2 Cor 5:19, for example. Others, like CS Lewis, say God doesn't send to hell, we send ourselves. The "jealous" aspect is difficult. I've come to think of it as a parent's love for a child. A parent who allows a child to make bad decisions can feel something like jealousy.

Did not Thomas Aquinas also believe that heretics should be killed as well? He may have been a great light in the Christian tradition but I'll bet that anyone tied to a stake would have told you otherwise as the flames began licking their feet. Sorry mate, your position holds as much water as the ontological argument. If your god has to be reduced to a play on words to exist, why not concede that your man made faith is all that you really have and jettison the vague concept of a god. Peace

@Mudflappus Indeed. Throughout Christians history we find that many chose to deal with others through violence, war, and murder. But those actions are not supported by Jesus. Rather, they are critiqued by him. Now, the Christian truth about God is that while God is not part of the material universe, God became part of the material universe in Jesus to show us that God loves & forgives all, including God's enemies who killed God in the flesh. That kind of love will lead us into peace.

@Mee551able Ahh. But the Judeo-Christian tradition claims the opposite - that God made man - and made man in God's image. It was a radical move for the ancient Jews to make, b/c in the ancient world it was believed that only kings, pharaohs, and other rulers were made in a divine image. The Bible democratizes that notion and claims everyone shares divine value. The modern secular concept of humanism owes a great deal to this insight of the ancient Jews.
