@newFranzFerencLiszt well...com'on Beethoven was a great pioneer but others have taken his works a step further...for example...FIdelio is not greater than Wagners operas....and Liszt pioneered symphonic poems and other ways of composing for the piano...there are people who can chanlenge beethoven in indviidual genres, but as a whole....none of them did it all like Beethoven had done

@dalecampbl5 nothing can compare Beethoven I'd say ;)

@bartje11 Hey Tard boy,my 1ST Sentence said; "MENDELSSOHN WAS A GREAT COMPOSER". But every composer great or otherwise has peaks & valleys, and this piece was not published in his lifetime,so my guess is that the composer shared my opinion on this sonata. Also, some of Mendelssohns greatest pieces were written when he was young(The Octet-Op 20,Midsummers Nights Dream overture) So just because I critiqued one of his early works doesnt mean I'm not giving him the credit he deserves you ignoramus.

@mrbrianmccarthy Well, if he wrote this when he was young, you'd better give him the bloody credit he deserves, you write something and I'll ciriticize it gladly!

Mendelssohn was a great composer, but this sonata was written when he was young, and you can hear in the 1st mvt that he didnt have sonata form down yet.For example,The counterpoint section is too long winded, and the secondary theme in the exposition is too remote from the heroic intro theme.IMO,there are too many dissimilar ideas in the 1st mvt to make it a great piece. The scherzo(2nd mvt) is much better.Mendelssohn flows better in the scherzo than the 1st.(which sounds like a patch job to me.)
I totally disagree with those who complain that this player slows and speeds up again--to me he's letting the music breathe! Too much piano playing today sounds like a race to the finish without enough attention to the shape and beauty of the music. For me this is a fine performance of a great work.

Easy to understand. You can hear in this sonata a lot of Bach, a little bit of Mozart, Schubert, a lot of Beethoven. These are Mendelssohn's influence, especially in his earlier years (he must have composed this sonata between 13 or 15). But you can also hear in this sonata some future Schumann, Liszt, and Grieg. These ones belong to the long list of great composers inspired by Mendelssohn. To hear, to assimilate, to create, to transmit and influence: that's the normal scheme of any artist.
