In The Dark Places

Opening the film is west Londoner Ro Allerton, with iconic Trellick Tower out-of -focus in the background. Ro is about the age of the soldier whose lines he recites from the song. Then a montage from Edgeware Road. I like the hipster who goes his own way- exiting frame right - at the end of the sequence. Birds flying in formation is in Holkham, Norfolk, shot from the pinewoods. Nosing around the City of London one Sunday morning I saw a figure mysteriously disappear through the door of a tower. I chased him, up the spiraling steps to the top where he was joining fellow- bell ringers in the belfry of the church of St Magnus the Martyr, London Bridge. The church is mentioned in Dickens's Oliver Twist. They were just about to start ringing, and wanting to film, I explained I was shooting pictures for a musician called PJ Harvey. One of them said: "PJ Harvey's my mate. I did her kitchen". They let me shoot and the carpenter who was indeed an old friend and had done her kitchen joined us a few months later for one of the Troxy shows. Amongst the rest of the imagery is a view of a colour contact sheet through a magnifying loupe of fighters on the plains outside Kabul in Afghanistan. 9/11 had happened 2 months before and this was November 2001, the day before the fall of Kabul to the Northern Alliance, and the ousting of the Taliban regime. This apparently effortless success probably fed the thinking of the invasion of Iraq 2 years later. Dark places. The final shot in the film was taken from above, through a grill looking down on the bells those ringers were pulling that Sunday morning. English poet John Donne wrote in 1624;

"any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

  • This album is incredible. These videos are brilliant.

  • The most beautiful video of the set? Just brilliant. I have no words to describe the beauty of the new face of England as conceived by Polly Jean Harvey.

  • haunting and beautiful, this woman has such a great spirit..

  • the music is perfect but Seamus Murphy's images take it onto another level

  • Genius..just pure love...

  • Enjoy being a kid now and see where practice takes you.

Don't expect to be a pop-star but never give in wanting to be one and work hard to be the best you can. You never know, when you are 16-18, all your hard work could see your name up in lights.

As I keep saying (sorry, I'm a boring old fart!:-), just enjoy yourself and play your music because you love it and it makes you happy. That's what all the very best did!

Good luck, Tia! I'll look out for you in a few more years! ;-)

  • Dont take it too seriously. The problem with these X-Factor and Brit Got Talent and everything is that it's told kids everywhere that anyone can simply decide to be an artist, immediately make a CD and become a millionaire and live a famous lifestyle.

It really isn't that easy and it is actually quite dangerous because when it doesn't happen to somebody, they get depressed and stop trying.

It takes a long time of practice and hard work.

  • @TiaMusique Be careful putting your age up online.

I had a quick look at your version of Little Help From My Friends and to be honest, though I couldn't do that at your age, I don't think you should be concentrating on a career in music just yet. Just enjoy playing and keep learning and give it a few years to see where you are. Kids your age who make it are extremely naturally gifted, others have to work hard and earn it. Enjoy your life and your music and see where it takes you.

  • P.s. I do hope you understand where I'm coming from. I don't think I've explained myself well and I'd hate to give the impression I was being anti-US. That couldn't be further from the truth. I love USA and the American people and really believe there isn't much between UK and US music. In fact, my top 3 bands ever are of 2 American bands and 1 Australian. My top ten are pretty much 50/50 US/UK but I do think overall, the UK has done it that bit better, even when the US did it first.

  • I hope you can understand why.

The reason I might have taken offence to your post is that it looks like you're treating US music as a barometer to measure the music of other countries, as though the USA is automatically perched atop the tree and other countries are to look up to it and try to come close to its greatness and be judged kindly by it.

There just doesn't seem to be a reason to mention US accents but I'm sure you did so innocently and I apologise if I'm wrongly offended.

  • Especially when, like myself, you believe Britain to have created the best bands of all time and - although I don't think the US is very far behind at all - British music to the best in the World (we make much of the worst in the World, too!). I know many other people, even Americans feel exactly the same and I'm sure if this thread were polled the results UK Vs US would be extremely close with the UK maybe slightly ahead.

As I said, maybe I'm being over sensitive here...
