Are you listening, Lawrence? I wrote this song for you.
Let's not draw attention to Paul's hopeless, desperately sad hair loss. It's just too painful for him to cope with.
This is a segment of TEXAS: The Return of the Real Part 9, where the character of Nathan Dilworth sings to a gang of Hell's Angels his tribute to the artist Lawrence Weiner. It was recorded in the Radio Patapoe studio in Amsterdam for my show Love Paul on Thursday 27th June 2008.
I remember the first time I saw you
I was 19 years old
Something inside me, it changed
I had changed
And I would never be the same
Lightning struck as I entered the Minimalism room
Of The Modern in Fort Worth
There you were
You're still there
People were walking by
They're probably still walking by
Don't see you, don't care
But I saw you and I knew
The rain falls on The Scarecrow
The wind blows past The Scarecrow
The Scarecrow does not scare the birds or the beasts
The Scarecrow only scares you and me
I devoured your every book
Visited every museum and gallery show I could
Went to Amsterdam in your footsteps
But Lawrence, those are pretty big footsteps
And no matter how fast, how hard I tried
I was and I will always be one step behind
Those words, your words
On walls, magazines and TV screens
Verbs inflected or inflicted
Without a subject and generally no direct object
A sculpture of words defies convention
Text in three dimensions
But no one looks or listens or pays attention
The rain falls on The Scarecrow
The wind blows past The Scarecrow
The Scarecrow does not scare the birds or the beasts
The Scarecrow only scares you and me
I am The Scarecrow
I am The Scarecrow
I am Lawrence Weiner
Look at me and scream
(scream)
I'm not Lawrence Weiner
Sometimes, a lot of the time, I don't know who I am
But when I see those words
ONE FLUORESCENT SEA MARKER POURED INTO THE SEA
I know
I am real
What kind of video camera do you use? The quality is great.
